tachi

A straight adjacent move that develops a stone or group toward the center.

Also known as

stand-up

Tachi—also called stand-up—is a move played directly beside one’s own stone or group on the same straight line. It usually extends a formation from the edge or side toward the center. The new stone occupies an immediately adjacent point, so this is not a jump or a diagonal extension.

The move helps a group develop toward the center, gain outward influence, and preserve a connected shape. Tachi emphasizes “standing up” from the side, whereas nobi is the broader term for an adjacent extension; a tachi is therefore distinct from a jump. Although solid and often useful, it can be slow or inefficient when the surrounding position does not justify such a straightforward extension.
