Thick cut protection
Using a thick group’s strength to defend a cutting point and make an opposing cut ineffective.
Thick cut protection is a move or shape in which surrounding thickness protects a potential cut, preventing the opponent from successfully splitting the stones. The defender uses the liberties, support, and tactical strength of a thick group to connect or reinforce the cutting point. The cutting stones may then be captured, driven into a bad fight, or rendered ineffective.
The aim is to maintain connection and secure the strategic value of the thick group without spending an inefficient move on a simple connection. Unlike an ordinary connection, this protection relies on the strength and tactical support of the surrounding thickness, which can punish an attempted cut. Thickness does not make every cut harmless: liberties, eye shape, ladders, nearby stones, and the resulting fight must still be read accurately.
