A thick shape is a local stone formation that is strong, well connected, and difficult to attack. It has few cutting points or other weaknesses, giving it resilience in fighting. Thickness is built through secure connections, eye potential, protected cutting points, and efficient shape. Such stones can withstand pressure while exerting influence over nearby areas.

The main purpose of a thick shape is to provide security and fighting strength, while supporting surrounding stones or broader strategic plans. A thick shape is a concrete local formation; thickness is the broader strategic quality or strength that the formation possesses. Even so, thickness is not automatically profitable: a thick shape may be inefficient or overconcentrated, and its value depends on the surrounding board position. Strength alone does not produce territory.
