Wariuchi is a move played in the gap between two opposing stones or groups, with the intention of dividing them. By placing a stone between opposing formations, it challenges their connection and can create separate targets or cutting points.
The aim is to split the opposing groups, prevent them from connecting efficiently, and gain attacking profit or sente. Wariuchi is a general splitting play, while warikomi more specifically describes an immediate wedge or insertion between closely placed opposing stones; the terms overlap in English usage. A wariuchi does not automatically succeed: its value depends on reading the opponent’s connection, counterattack, and the liberties that result.
