Wedge

A move inserted into the gap of an opponent’s one-space jump.

Also known as

Warikomi

A Wedge (Warikomi) is a move played between two stones separated by a one-space jump. The wedging stone enters the jump’s gap, attacking the shape directly rather than simply approaching it.

The move may threaten to cut, force a reply, or create tactical complications. It can sometimes be sacrificed in exchange for benefits on the outside. Its aims are to disrupt the jumped stones’ connection, induce a profitable response, or exploit their mutual shortage of support. A one-space jump is the shape being attacked; the wedge is the move inserted into that shape. The wedge is not automatically successful: its value depends on the resulting cuts, captures, liberties, and support from nearby stones.
