overextended shape
A shape made inefficient or vulnerable by pushing an attack or extension too far.
Also known as
An overextended shape—also called an overstretched shape—is a shape in which stones have been extended or committed too far, usually through an over-aggressive attack. The result is often a group that is inefficient, heavy, or vulnerable.
The shape arises when attacking stones advance beyond the support of nearby stones or surrounding influence. The opponent can then exploit weaknesses, cuts, or inefficient connections. This differs from overconcentration, which results from placing stones too closely together; an overextended shape is about excessive extension or commitment during play.
An extended shape is not automatically overextended. The judgment depends on the surrounding support, available liberties, cutting points, and the opponent’s forcing replies.
