bad shape
An inefficient or vulnerable formation of stones that limits their effectiveness.
Also known as
Bad shape is a negative evaluation of a stone formation. Compared with a more effective shape, it may be inefficient, heavy, weak, or otherwise disadvantageous. It is a broad concept rather than the name of one specific pattern, so it includes—but is not limited to—formations such as an empty triangle or a dango.
Bad shape commonly arises from overconcentration, too few liberties, poor connectivity, reduced potential to make eyes, or stones that are difficult to use effectively. Recognizing it helps a player choose more efficient moves and avoid creating unnecessary weaknesses. A normally bad shape can still be justified when it serves a tactical purpose, gains sente, or is necessary for life or connection.
