crawl
A low, edge-oriented move that values safety, territory, and connection over speed or outside influence.
Also known as
A crawl is a low move made along or near the edge of the board, commonly progressing horizontally beneath or alongside opposing stones. Crawling typically uses the first or second line and may be repeated several times along the side, gaining secure points or connection while remaining difficult to attack.
A crawl can secure territory, strengthen or connect a group, or help stones escape along the edge when a faster, more influential move is not practical. Unlike an ordinary extension or a push toward the center, it deliberately stays low and close to the edge, emphasizing safety and territory over influence and speed.
Crawling too far or too early can be slow. It may allow the opponent to take valuable outside influence or make a larger move elsewhere.
