De is a move played through a gap between or alongside opposing stones, allowing a group that is surrounded or enclosed to emerge. The move advances into a passage in the opponent’s shape—often between opposing stones or along a boundary—and creates access to the outside.
Its aims are to escape confinement, gain outward influence, or disrupt the opponent’s formation. De emphasizes emerging through a gap or breaking through a formation, so it is more specific than a general pushing move. The stones that emerge may still be vulnerable to being cut, chased, or attacked if the gap does not provide enough support.
