Double hane

A double hane is a Go sequence in which two hane moves are played consecutively, usually around opposing stones or in a contact fight. A hane is a single move that bends around an opposing stone; the double hane is the consecutive two-step form of that move.

The second hane follows the first in the local sequence, bending around the opponent’s stones and often creating complications involving cuts or liberties. This shape can gain the initiative, attack or separate stones, and exploit the tactical potential of a hane sequence. It is not automatic, however: its success depends on the available liberties, cutting points, and the opponent’s forcing responses. Playing both hanes without checking these details can produce bad shape or an overplay.
