Hanekomi

A hanekomi is a hane played between two adjacent opposing stones, typically at the point where they can be cut. The played stone is placed diagonally adjacent to an opposing stone while entering the gap between the two stones. This combines the bending action of a hane with an inward wedge or cut, and may begin a cutting or sacrifice sequence.

The aim is to exploit a cutting point, attack stones that might otherwise connect, or gain tactical momentum through forcing exchanges. Unlike an ordinary hane, which simply bends around one stone, a hanekomi specifically enters the gap between two opposing stones. Its tactical value must be read carefully: the played stone, and sometimes nearby stones, may become vulnerable if the resulting cutting sequence or capturing race is misjudged.
