Double sente

A point that is sente for either player, making it an urgent priority.

Also known as

Ryou-sente

Double sente is a position or move-point that is sente for both players. Whoever plays there first gains the initiative and generally forces the opponent to reply. The point therefore has effective sente value in either direction: after one player takes it, the opponent must answer locally or accept the resulting loss or disadvantage.

Recognizing double sente helps you find urgent moves and choose the correct order of play, especially in the endgame. Unlike ordinary sente, which benefits only the player who currently has the initiative, double sente is valuable to both players. It is also different from reverse sente, where one player can force a reply but the opponent cannot do the same at that point.

Accurate reading is essential. A position that appears to be double sente may be only almost sente, or its force may disappear after a preparatory move.
