Furikawari

Furikawari is an exchange of stones, territory, influence, or local advantage between different parts of the board. A player may allow or initiate a local trade and then gain compensation in another area, often through a broad sequence rather than a single move.

The purpose is to evaluate and resolve a whole-board trade when continuing locally would be less valuable than taking compensation elsewhere. Unlike an ordinary capture or purely local exchange, furikawari emphasizes reciprocal strategic compensation across separate board areas. Its value depends on sente, aji, timing, influence, and the resulting global position, so material count alone is not enough.
