Go theory
The organized body of knowledge used to understand positions, choose moves, and study Go.
Go theory is the systematic study of Go principles, strategic ideas, tactical patterns, opening knowledge, life and death, and positional judgment. It brings together general principles with analyzed patterns and variations, including opening frameworks, joseki, tesuji, reading, shape, influence, and territory.
It provides a framework for evaluating positions, selecting moves, studying games, and carrying knowledge from one position to another. Go theory is the broad field of knowledge about the game; joseki, fuseki, tesuji, and similar terms refer to particular components or applications within it. Its principles are guidelines, not rigid rules: their value depends on the whole-board position and on concrete reading.
