Fuseki

The opening phase of Go, focused on strategic stone placement across the whole board.

Also known as

Opening

Fuseki is the opening stage of a Go game: the period when players arrange stones across the board before play develops into substantial local fighting. Opening moves establish corners, sides, influence, frameworks, and the direction of play. Players balance the efficiency of each local move with the needs of the whole board.

The aim of Fuseki is to build a favorable overall position and create strategically valuable possibilities for the middle game. Unlike joseki, which consists of established local sequences usually played in a corner, Fuseki concerns whole-board opening strategy. It is not a fixed sequence of moves. The value of an opening choice depends on the surrounding stones and on the resulting balance across the board.
