Go board

The Go board is the playing surface for a game of Go: a grid of intersecting lines. The standard board has 19×19 lines; 9×9 and 13×13 boards are also commonly used. Stones are placed on the intersections, not inside the squares. Board coordinates and landmarks such as star points likewise refer to these intersections.

The board supplies the spatial framework for placing stones, forming groups, claiming territory, and resolving captures. It is distinct from the stones themselves: the board is the surface, while the stones are the pieces placed on it. Board size affects the scale and character of play. The 19×19 board is standard, while smaller boards are commonly used for teaching and shorter games.
