honte

A sound, orthodox move that meets the position’s essential need without unnecessary overplay.

Also known as

proper move

Honte is a proper or orthodox move that fits the position well. It is usually solid, efficient, and strategically sound: instead of forcing an unnecessarily aggressive continuation, it addresses the position’s key point while preserving useful connections, shape, liberties, influence, or territory.

The purpose of a honte is to maintain balance and improve the position reliably with a move that is difficult for the opponent to exploit. The term describes the quality and appropriateness of a move, not a fixed shape or a particular tactical technique. A honte may be quiet, but it is not simply passive. Its value depends on the situation: a move that is a honte in one position may be too slow or too submissive in another.
