Orthodox
A conventional Go move or style grounded in established principles and familiar patterns.
Also known as
Orthodox (also called Conventional) describes a move or style of play that is normal, conventional, and accepted within established Go practice.
It relies on familiar principles, standard shape, and commonly studied patterns such as established joseki, rather than exceptional or highly provocative choices. The aim is sound, reliable play that fits established theory and is usually easy to understand and evaluate.
Orthodox play is conventional, unlike overplay, hamete, and other unusual choices that deliberately depart from standard expectations. However, the label describes conventionality, not objective correctness: an orthodox move is not necessarily strongest in every position, and a non-orthodox move may be better in a particular position.
