Indirect connection
A tactical link that keeps stones connected without directly joining them.
An indirect connection is a link between stones or groups that are not directly connected, yet separating them would be difficult, unfavorable, or tactically answerable. The connection may depend on the shape of the stones, their liberties, support from nearby stones, or follow-up tactics rather than on a solid connecting move.
This relationship can preserve connectivity while saving a move, giving the position greater efficiency or flexibility than a direct connection. However, it is not absolute. Unlike a direct connection, the stones are not joined along adjacent points and may still contain a cutting possibility. Whether the connection works must be verified by reading: the opponent may be able to cut if the surrounding position, liberties, or tactical replies do not provide sufficient support.
