String connection
How stones join into one chain and remain connected on the board.
Also known as
A String connection (also called a Connection) is the relationship between stones that makes them part of the same connected string. Through adjacent links, the stones share the liberties and status of one chain. The link may be direct, or it may depend on an indirect connecting shape.
The purpose of a string connection is to preserve continuity, prevent the opponent from cutting, and retain the strength and mobility of the linked stones. A string is the resulting chain of connected stones; a string connection is the relationship or move that joins the stones into that chain.
Do not assume that an apparently secure connection is fully safe. An opponent may still exploit a cutting point or a shortage of liberties, turning the connection into a tactical weakness.
