kake

A kake is played diagonally adjacent to an opponent’s stone, usually to threaten cutting it off from another stone or group. It attacks the surrounding shape while creating or emphasizing a potential cutting point.

The move makes use of the diagonal relationship between stones. If the opponent connects or responds incorrectly, the kake may develop into a cut or separation. Unlike a direct attachment, it is played on a diagonal point rather than directly next to the opposing stone; kaketsugi is the corresponding diagonal connection. Its success depends on reading the opponent’s possible responses and considering the nearby liberties and connections.
