A hanging connection (Kaketsugi) is a Go connection technique in which a stone completes a tiger’s-mouth shape and links stones that would otherwise be vulnerable. The connecting stone is played at the diagonal point of the tiger’s-mouth formation. This joins the stones while retaining the shape’s characteristic protected point.
The aim is to connect securely, preserve useful shape, and limit the opponent’s cutting opportunities. Unlike a simple direct connection, it does not place stones directly adjacent in a straight line; the connection works through the distinctive tiger’s-mouth shape. Even so, a hanging connection is not automatically safe. Its effectiveness depends on liberties, surrounding stones, and tactical chances to cut.
