surround

A surround (Kakoi) is a formation or strategic action in which your stones encircle an area or opposing stones. The surrounding stones may use connected stones, extensions, and supporting shapes to reduce escape routes and create an enclosure.

A surround can secure territory, build influence, or confine and attack an opposing group. It is a general surrounding formation: a shimari is specifically a corner enclosure, whereas a moyo is a larger and looser territorial framework. An enclosure does not automatically make territory secure. Gaps may still allow an invasion or reduction, or give the enclosed group a successful route of escape.
