Karai

Karai is a severe move that takes solid territory and, in doing so, hurts the opponent. It may deny the opponent useful territory or development, obtaining reliable profit while making the opposing position less effective or less profitable.

The emphasis is on secure territorial gain and restriction, rather than on maximizing influence or attack potential. Karai describes the move’s severe, uncompromising character—not simply the fact that it takes territory. The judgment is contextual: pursuing solid territory too aggressively can give up attacking chances or leave the move inefficient.
