kosumi
A flexible diagonal move that connects or strengthens stones while preserving options.
A kosumi is a move played at one of the four points diagonally adjacent to a friendly stone. It creates a diagonal relationship or connection, but this connection is less solid than a direct connection and may need tactical support. The move can efficiently develop shape and influence while keeping the position flexible.
A diagonal relationship is not automatically secure. The stones may still be separated by a cutting move or a tactical sequence, so the surrounding liberties, nearby stones, and cutting points must be considered. The related term kosumi-tsuke refers specifically to a diagonal attachment played against an opponent’s stone; kosumi is the broader term for the diagonal move.
