A brilliant move is a move of exceptional ingenuity or strength. It often finds a tactical solution or exploits a subtle feature of the position, creating a decisive advantage, refuting an opponent’s plan, solving a difficult tactical problem, or revealing a hidden resource.

Its identity comes from the move’s result and quality, not from any fixed shape or sequence. Such a move commonly depends on precise reading, exact timing, and tactical insight. A brilliant move describes the exceptional quality of one particular move; tesuji is a recognized tactical technique, which may or may not be brilliant in its specific context.

The label is evaluative and can be subjective. A move that looks brilliant may fail under accurate reading, or its success may depend entirely on the position.
