Large monkey jump

The large monkey jump is a tactical jump along the side of the board. It advances a stone or group while using the edge and the opponent’s limited blocking options to maintain flexibility. Its spacing and edge geometry are characteristic of a monkey jump, but it is played on a larger scale, with a wider reach than the standard form.

This move can extend or help a group escape along the side efficiently, reduce the opponent’s territorial potential, or induce a favorable continuation. It is not automatically successful: the result depends on the exact edge position, supporting stones, and the opponent’s available blocking and cutting moves. Compared with an ordinary monkey jump, the large monkey jump covers a greater distance or creates a broader shape.
