Transposition
An alternative move order that reaches the same or an effectively equivalent Go position.
A transposition is a different order of play that leads to the same or effectively equivalent Go position. Moves that could have been played in another order are rearranged, often producing the same result within a joseki, fuseki, or local sequence. The term is useful when studying variations that look different move by move but arrive at an equivalent position.
Recognizing a transposition helps players compare variations and judge whether the order of play changes sente, aji, or other strategic conditions. It differs from a reversion: a reversion returns to an earlier position or state, while a transposition reaches an equivalent position through an alternative sequence. The sequences are not necessarily interchangeable. A changed move order can alter sente, ko threats, liberties, aji, timing, or interactions elsewhere on the board.
