Seiza

The traditional Japanese kneeling posture sometimes associated with formal Go etiquette.

Seiza is a formal seated posture in which a person kneels with the legs folded beneath the body and sits back on the heels. The legs are tucked under the body, the tops of the feet rest on the floor, and the torso is held upright.

In the context of Go, seiza reflects traditional Japanese etiquette and decorum. It is a posture and cultural practice—not a Go move, rule, or required way to play. Players are not required to sit in seiza, and the posture can be uncomfortable or unsuitable for some people, so players may choose a different sitting position.
