Fair result describes a balanced outcome that is regarded as the normal value of a sequence or local exchange. To judge it, players compare the territory, influence, sente, and other strategic benefits gained by both sides. The point is to assess whether the exchange has produced an equitable result.

A fair result is not the same as jigo. Jigo means the entire game is tied, whereas a fair result may apply only to one local position or sequence. The assessment depends on context: komi, sente, outside influence, and the broader position can all affect whether the outcome is considered fair. Thus, an exchange that looks even in isolation may have a different value when its wider strategic effects are included.
