A vulgar move—also called a crude move or zokusuji—is an unsophisticated way of playing, often regarded as the opposite of a tesuji. It commonly produces an inefficient shape or continuation, overlooks a more precise sequence, or handles a local position without respecting its underlying suji.

The term identifies technically unrefined play and distinguishes a move that merely works from one that is skillful and efficient. A vulgar move is not necessarily an immediate blunder or a losing move: it may succeed locally while remaining inferior in technique or overall efficiency. The judgment depends on the position and the alternatives available. A move that is normally crude can be correct in a particular context.
