Bulge
A sideways thickening that makes a line or chain of stones stronger and more resistant to cutting.

A Bulge (also known as Fukure) is a move or resulting shape in which a stone projects outward from a line or chain, making the stones locally thicker. It is formed by placing a stone beside the middle portion of a straight chain or connected group, creating an outward bump rather than simply continuing the line.
This added thickness can strengthen the group, improve its resistance to cutting, and secure useful liberties or connections. Unlike a simple extension, a bulge expands sideways from the existing line. It is not automatically efficient, however: when the extra thickness serves no concrete tactical or strategic purpose, the bulge may leave the group heavy or waste a move.
