Turn

A turn is a move that changes the direction of a connected line of stones, creating a bend or corner. The played stone is usually adjacent to a friendly stone and continues the formation at a right angle. It may turn around an opposing stone or another important tactical point.

The purpose is to change direction while preserving connection, shape, or local flexibility. The term is also used as Bend or Magari. Unlike a hane, which typically bends diagonally around an opposing stone, a turn is defined primarily by the right-angle change in direction from one’s own stones. Usage can overlap with the general terms “turn” and “bend,” and some positions may be described more specifically as a hane or by another shape term.
