Nirensei fuseki
An opening formation built from two star-point stones on one side of the board.
Also known as
Nirensei fuseki is an opening formation in which one player places two stones on star points along the same side of the board, usually in adjacent corners. The stones create a framework that can develop influence and potential territory efficiently along that side.
Because the framework is not fully committed, the player retains flexible choices for later approaches, extensions, and invasions. Nirensei fuseki is an opening pattern rather than a joseki or a fixed sequence of moves. Its three-stone counterpart is sanrensei fuseki.
The formation is not automatically valuable in every position. Its effectiveness depends on the surrounding stones and on how the opponent approaches or invades the developing framework. The same placement can therefore lead to different plans as the board develops.
