slide

A slide is a move toward the board edge, usually played from or alongside a stone on the third line and commonly placed on the second line. The new stone advances along the side rather than jumping away from the existing stone. This often preserves a route for extending or escaping along the edge.

The aim may be to secure territory or a base, reduce the opponent’s room to attack, or help a group escape along the side. Unlike a jump, a slide is defined by its movement toward the edge and its low, side-oriented placement. That low position can be a drawback: it may concede outside influence or development. Whether the slide is valuable depends on the surrounding position.
