Taisha Joseki is a family of corner joseki variations featuring the characteristic large-slant pattern. It usually arises from a 4-4 corner stone followed by an approach and pincer. Its purpose is to resolve a corner fight while creating or contesting outside influence and attacking possibilities.
These variations demand complicated joseki reading. Cuts, ladders, sacrifices, ko fights, and frequent transpositions can all appear, producing numerous branches. Unlike a simple territorial corner joseki, Taisha is known for exceptionally complicated fighting. It is not one fixed sequence: the correct continuation depends heavily on reading and the surrounding board, so applying a memorized line without checking the position can be dangerous.
