big point

A big point is a move of unusually high strategic value because it affects a large area of the board or establishes substantial territory or influence. It is generally played in an open area: for example, to extend a framework, secure a base, reduce the opponent’s potential, or take the largest remaining territorial opportunity.

The aim is to seize the most valuable broad-board opportunity before the opponent can take it, especially during the opening and middle game. Unlike a local tactical move, a big point is judged mainly by its global board-wide value rather than by an immediate local sequence. Its value is position-dependent, however: an urgent tactical move, an attack on a weak group, or necessary defense can take priority over a nominally larger strategic point.
